US authorizes Orsted's Sunrise Wind overseas wind farm to power New York homes

The Biden administration on Tuesday gave final approval to Orsted and Eversource's. Sunrise Wind offshore wind center, which is expected to. supply power to more than 320,000 homes in New york city.

The announcement was the most recent positive development for the. project, which Denmark's Orsted cautioned just months back could. stop working without a brand-new contract that would cover soaring expenses for. equipment and financing.

Orsted and Eversource said separately that they had taken a. final financial investment decision on the job in combination with the. federal approval and would begin onshore construction.

Dawn Wind is the seventh overseas wind project approval. by President Joe Biden's Interior Department, which has an objective. of allowing 30 gigawatts of overseas wind capacity by 2030 as. part of the president's environment change program.

Daybreak Wind, which is expected to be the nation's largest. offshore wind project once it is finished in 2026, was awarded. a conditional contract by New york city state officials last month. under a program suggested to support the embattled industry.

In a statement, the Interior Department said the project. would have a total capability of 924 megawatts. It will produce. about 800 tasks throughout building and construction and 300 during operations.

Interior's Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, which is. accountable for allowing overseas wind facilities, approved. less wind turbines than the designer had actually proposed to reduce. impacts to seafloor habitats and Atlantic cod.

Sunrise Wind will lie about 16 nautical miles south. of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts and 27 nautical miles east. of Montauk, New York.

Orsted is working out last terms for the job's 25-year. agreement. The business prepares to get Eversource's 50% stake in. Dawn Wind, however the utility will lead the project's onshore. building.

Orsted took a big financial hit on its U.S. offshore wind. portfolio last year and canceled advancement of two tasks in. New Jersey.
